Mary (Van Etten) Sigler is the descendant of a New Netherland settler.
Mary is the daughter of Peter Vannatta (Van Etten) Her mother has not been confirmed, but as the wife of her father, Jannetje (Ariaense) Van Etten (abt.1720-) appears to be the best candidate.
She married jacob Sigler and they resided in Oxford Twp. Sussex County, New Jersey.
Mary married Jacob Sigler and had three sons
Phillip
Peter
Jacob Jr.
When Mary's father, Peter Vannatta, died in 1790, he named her in his will and also made her one of his two executors. It seems her father held her in high esteem as this was an unusual thing for a daughter who has multiple brothers. [1].
Research Notes
From Early Germans of New Jersey. According to this excerpt from the Early Germans of NJ, Petrius Van Atta baptised 13 October 1719
In his will (Oxford Twp, Sussex County) dated 22 February, probated 22 June 1790 (wife unknown) had the following children: Samuel, Tonica, Peter, Ann (wife of Jacob Sigler), Margaret, Benjamin, Hannah (wife of Joseph Coplin), Mary (Wife of Jacob Sigler) (This has been verfieiedfrom an abstract of hsi will.)
Mary is often thought to be the daughter of Johannis Van Etten, and was previouslty identifed here in that way. However, Peter Vannatta's will clearly names Mary Sigler, wife of Jacob Sigler as his daugter and even names her as an executtor of his estate.
The child of Johannes baptised as Catrina is not Mary Sigler as is often claimed..
She is said to have died either 1807 in Hillsborough, Somerset, New Jersey, United State (this seems unlikely as jacob died in 1808-09 and referred to his loving wife in his will, although not by name.)
She possibly died 12 Feb 1812. (un sourced claimbeing reearched)
Doubts about her identity
Although Shirley Kagan McCollough is listed in the DNA matches in the upper right of this profile, and her daughter is also listed (me) - We descend from Jacob SIgler - I have been unable to identify any DNA matches to the Van Etten family beyond this Mary. While that in itself does not refute Mary's parentage, or that she was the mother of Jacob, it does raise some questions as we have been unable to use DNA to verify this family relation of Jacob Sigler's mother through our line. If other DNA descendatns of Peter Van Etten, or his father Emanual Van Etten would be willing to try triangulating our DNA to see if we are a match, that would be appreciated. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
